ADS805E Application Field and Working Principle

Data Acquisition encompasses techniques to acquire or measure data from an environment and use the extracted data for further processing. Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) is an important element of data acquisition system. ADCs convert analog signals into digital signals, allowing the analog signals to be processed and used by digital computers. In the world of data acquisition, Texas Instruments ADS805E is a preferred ADC due to its power efficient design and flexible configuration.The ADS805E is a monolithic 16-bit high-speed parallel A/D converter designed for data acquisition applications. It is an economic, single-chip alternative to discrete multiplexer/A/D combinations. It consumes less power, thus making it power efficient and suitable for various battery-operated applications. It also offers an internal digital filtering feature, allowing noise rejection and A/D resolution enhancement. This ADC offers flexibility in terms of user configuration. It provides flexible input ranges, from ±20mV or ±50mV full scale to ± 5V full scale, to accommodate a wide range of signal levels. The reference, with a voltage accuracy of ±2mV, sets the full scale input of the converter, after parallelly connecting two external resistors. This reference enables fast conversion rates, allowing users to configure the sampling rate of the converter based on their application requirements.The ADS805E converts analog input samples into 16-bit digital words. The reference sets the full-scale input range, while the digital data is converted in the successive approximation register (SAR). The ADC first compares the analog input voltage with the digital result stored in the SAR, and then records the digital result. This process is repeated until a set of digital data is obtained. The maximum sample rate of ADS805E is 5Msps.The ADS805E also offers a hybrid differential/single-ended input architecture that allows the converter to switch between differential and single-ended sampling.
