Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are ubiquitous devices, used in virtually any application where analog signals need to be converted into digital form. The ADS8920BEVM-PDK is a complete training, evaluation and development platform designed to help users explore the features of the ADS8920BE, a 12-bit high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a wide range of features and applications.

The ADS8920BEVM-PDK platform integrates the ADS8920B device into a hardware, firmware, and software environment, allowing users to interact and evaluate almost any factor of the device. Application Field

The ADS8920BEVM-PDK is a direct-to-digital converter utilized for signal acquisition and processing. The device can be used for applications involving time-critical sampling at data rates up to 500Msps (mega-samples per second). This includes applications for sampling radio frequency (RF) signals for digital signal processing (DSP) systems, as well as commercial or consumer appliances that require wide dynamic range with high sampling rates. The device can also be used for evaluating digital-to-analog converters (DACs) or for evaluating the performance of other critical components in a signal chain.

Working Principle

The ADS8920BE is built around a differential switched-capacitor array architecture that supports sampling rates up to 500Msps. The on-chip reference (which requires an external source of 1.8V) with an adjustable full-scale range and a low power dissipation of 120mW.

In operation, the ADS8920BE first digitizes the incoming analog signal into a digital form. It then converts it into a delta-sigma format and decimates the signal to achieve resolution with much lower noise than conventional ADC’s. The device supports manual control of the sampling rate and gain settings, allowing a wide dynamic range. It also features on-chip digital error detection and correction circuitry, providing reliable conversion of signals with error-free reception.

The ADS8920BE is also designed to operate at very low power levels. The device can be used in both continuous sampling mode and burst mode, allowing the user to direct the power dissipation. It also features advanced power management options such as auto-power down mode, low-power sleep mode and programmable power-down levels. This ensures that the device operates within the power budget of a system with minimal power consumption.

The ADS8920BEVM-PDK platform provides a comprehensive development environment for rapid prototyping and application development.
