Motion sensors are devices used to measure physical motion, typically acceleration, tilt and vibration. Accelerometers are motion sensors that measure acceleration in one, two or three axes along a Cartesian coordinate system.
The ADXL316WBCSZ-RL7 is a triaxial, low-power, low-profile, MEMS accelerometer ideal for industrial, consumer, health and fitness, gaming and automotive applications. It provides a measurement range of ±2 g in all three axes, and it is suitable for use in low-g acceleration range, or tilt measurement applications.
Application Field
The wide range of acceleration measurement, low power consumption and small package size make the ADXL316WBCSZ-RL7 a suitable choice for many consumer, automotive, industrial and gaming applications. In consumer applications, the accelerometer can be used in smartphones and tablets for motion-sensing games and gesture recognition. It can be used in sports and health applications such as pedometers, activity monitors or exercise mates. Working Principle
The ADXL316WBCSZ-RL7 is an analog-output, single-axis accelerometer that utilizes the MEMS (Micro-Electronic-Mechanical Systems) technology. It is built with a sensing element and ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). The sensing element measures the linear acceleration, changes it into a displacement, and then convert the displacement into an analog voltage output. The ASIC amplifies the voltage output from the sensing element and converts it into the digital outputformat.
The acceleration force applied to the accelerometer is sensed by the seismic mass inside the MEMS sensing element. The seismic mass consists of a small proof mass suspended between two suspension structures. When a linear acceleration force is applied to the accelerometer, the proof mass is displaced in the direction of the force. The displacement of the proof mass causes one of the two capacitors to change the capacitance gap, which in turn changes the internal electric field inside the capacitor. The change in the electric field produces a proportional change in voltage, which is amplified by the ASIC to produce the output signal.
The ADXL316WBCSZ-RL7 uses a band gap reference and temperature compensating techniques to provide the highest accuracy measurement. On-chip filtering further improves the total output noise and offset variance. The wide operating temperature range and low power consumption makes the accelerometer suitable for use in energy-constrained, real-time applications. The device also includes an embedded FIFO (First In, First Out) memory to reduce the amount of bus traffic and improve system efficiency and power consumption.
