Motion Sensors - Accelerometers
Motion sensor accelerometers are widely used in various applications and are employed to detect mechanical acceleration in all three spatial axes. Out of all the accelerometers available in the market, the ADXL1004BCPZ is a low-power, digital, three-axis accelerometer with selectable ranges of ±2g/±4g/±8g that presents a perfect combination of size and measurement performance. It is suitable for applications such as embedded motion sensing in wearable devices, as it requires only one external capacitor in addition to power supply, ground and output pins. The ADXL1004BCPZ features low power consumption with an average current of only 70 μA in measurement mode, and optimized interface logic to reduce power consumption and interface complexity.
ADXL1004BCPZ Applications
The ADXL1004BCPZ is suited for all kinds of applications related to measuring acceleration and motion of an object, mainly in three primary axes. Its features like small size, low power consumption, selectable g-ranges and output data rate make it suitable for a multitude of applications, such as brushless DC motors, 3D gaming controllers, data loggers, home and industrial automation systems, biometrics, conditioning monitoring systems, white goods and vacuum cleaners. This accelerometer is also useful for navigation, orientation, mobile device measurement and navigation, UAVs, and other motion detection applications.
ADXL1004BCPZ Working Principle
The ADXL1004BCPZ accelerometer operates by measuring capacitance changes due to acceleration. It consists of a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) alongside an electronic interface which comprises two parts: an analog system, and a digital system. The analog system is composed of capacitive sensing elements complete with sense amplifiers, a sample and hold stage, and a signal conditioning block. This block is responsible for amplified voltage of the signal coming from the sensing elements and is then provided to the digital system, which processes the signal and sends it over a serial digital output.
The micro-machined sensing structure contains a pair of proof masses and four spring-suspended plate capacitors mounted on a silicon flake. As an object (containing the accelerometer) decelerates during straight-line motion, the proof masses are displaced in such a way that the capacitance between the plates change. The change in capacitance is in proportion to the magnitude of deceleration. This change in capacitance generates a voltage signal that is proportional to the acceleration of the object. This voltage is then amplified by the sense amplifier and transmitted to the signal conditioning circuit. The digital processor reads the data provided by the analog component, which is then converted into 16-bit digital codes, representative of the resultant accelerations in the three axis. The processed data is then transmitted over the serial digital output.
The ADXL1004BCPZ is an excellent choice for a wide variety of practical applications which require reliable and accurate measurements of acceleration in three axes. It provides a 0.1 milliG resolution and comes with a low power consumption and selectable dynamic ranges of ±2g/±4g/±8g.
