Encoders: AEDR-8711-100 Application Field and Working Principle
Encoders are devices used in electronic equipment to transform electrical signals or pulse sequences into digital signals. The AEDR-8711-100 encoder is one of the devices from Renishaw’s family of rotary optical encoders, designed to supply digital position feedback measurements in various industrial and medical applications. It may be used in fields from machine tools to medical equipment and robotics.
The AEDR-8711-100 encoder typically consists of an array of jagged lines, each one slightly wider than the adjacent line. The pattern is printed on a cylindrical or flat disc which is linked to a mechanical device. As the device turns, this circular pattern is scanned by an optical sensor and consequently generates an electrical signal.
The device can measure rotational speed or linear speed and has a wide range of resolutions, up to 4,096 quantum steps per revolution. Working Principle
The AEDR-8711-100 encoder is composed of a photo interrupter, two LEDs, two photo transistors, and the wheel with the optical pattern. The wheel is linked to the mechanical device to be measured, so as to detect the movement of the device. The pattern printed on the wheel is composed of light and dark lines. When light passes through the pattern, it is interrupted by the dark lines, and when the wheel turns, the light activates the photo transistor in sequence.
Ever though this optical pattern is circular, it is decoded as a linear signal due to the use of the LED and its opposite photo transistor. The signal that the two photo transistors sent to the photo interrupter are compared in order to sense the rotational direction and how quickly one is traveling. The direction and quantization resolution can also be detected by the light and dark lines in the pattern.
The photo transistor allows the LED to output a pulse signal which is then amplified by the linear amplifier and outputs a high-grade pulsating signal. In order to turn the optical signal into digital output, this pulsating signal is then sent to latches, registers, and comparators, from which the digital output is generated.
