Surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters are widely used in the telecommunication industry for antenna duplexer applications and for widely spread wireless networks. AFS2442.0S4-T SAW filters are one of the most commonly used electronic components for these applications.
An AFS2442.0S4-T is a SAW filter that employs a layered substrate, consisting of alternating electrodes and piezoelectric material typically produced from lithium tantalate (LiTaO3). The substrate has multiple layers with electrodes arranged on the surface of alternate layers and electrodes which are simply conductive Au-Sn strips soldered onto the ceramic surface. The AFS2442.0S4-T design uses four resonators to cover the cell phones’ mobile frequency bandwidth. The upper two layers, formed by the first and second electrodes, comprise a single input transducer while the other lower two layers are formed by the third and fourth electrodes and then the output transducer.
In operation, an electrical signal applied to the input transducer will generate shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) launch onto the surface of the substrate. As the waves propagate along the substrate, a large part of the wave energy is reflected multiple times at the electrodes, and this reflection results in a passband transmission at the middle frequency set by the dimension and orientation of the transducers, and the inter-electrode spacing. The passband transmission will be enhanced further by adding of perturbing elements like grating-overcut gratings. The output transducer acts as a receiver to collect the propagated SAW energy to generate an output electrical signal which is filtered.
AFS2442.0S4-T SAW filters are used in mobile communication systems requiring a wide frequency range. They are highly popular for their lower insertion loss, high selectivity and high power handling capability. They are also ideal for frequency duplexer application for tower mounted base station.
