Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters employ the propagation of acoustic waves over the surface of a piezoelectric crystal in order to separate, amplify, or select desired frequencies from an input signal. The AFS315E is a type of SAW filter typically used in communications and radio frequency (RF) applications. It is designed to offer a wide range of performance capabilities while still being affordable.

The AFS315E is an RF filter that operates in the frequency range from 890MHz to 920MHz. It uses two sets of resonators, one to extract the input signal and the other to act as a low-pass filter to reject unwanted frequencies. These surface acoustic waves propagate along the surface of the substrate, guided by “gratings,” which are metal interdigital transducers (IDTs) printed on the substrate. As the waves propagate past IDTs, their frequencies are selected and amplified. The result is a filtered signal that has low levels of distortion.
