AL6562AS-13 Application Field and Working Principle

AL6562AS-13 is a one-chip constant-current power device for driving low-power White-LED and color LEDs from DC power supplies. It is mainly used in PMIC - LED Drivers, such as charging indicator, backlight, lightening and other similar applications. With just one device, it is able to drive a large number of LEDs with precision current control and adequate current limiting, very suitable for applications in vehicles, consumer electronics, and other. This article is written to introduce the application field and general working principle of AL6562AS-13.

Application Field and Overview

AL6562AS-13 provides a cost-effective option with enhanced LED lighting control over other LED drivers with similar functionalities. Among all LED drivers, AL6562AS-13 offers the best power supply efficiency up to 96%, which means it can drive the LED with minimum power dissipated. In addition, the minimum controlling current is 1uA, making the device detects weak signals with low usage of power. The features, such as low operation voltage, low power consumption, wide input voltage range and strong output adjustable range, make AL6562AS-13 suitable to use in a variety of driving scenarios in PMIC – LED Drivers. These scenarios include backlight, charging, battery level indicator, camera flash and other similar applications.

The device also offers improved accuracy, programmability and system performance with up to 18 bits of brightness control. On top of that, the ICs can also provide over-temperature protection as well as over-current protection. The power supply of AL6562AS-13 is 4.2V-18V. The voltage source is DC and not AC, to enable a stable power source for the chip to be worked with the highest precision.

Working Principle

The working principle of AL6562AS-13 is to control the LED current based on a digital signal. It converts the digital signal from a single low voltage battery, such as a 3V coin-cell battery, into an analog current for driving LEDs. The device operates with a logic-level pin IControl, which controls the LED current. It has three logic state pins — High, Low and Buried. When signal pin IControl is low, the LED current is off and when signal pin is high, the LED current is on. The buried state is used to disable or enable the pin IControl and the buried-state current can be set via user-definable resistor.

In addition to the logic states, the output of the LED can also be adjusted via the brightness configuration resistor, RBR. By increasing the resistance value of RBR, the LED output current is decreased, while decreasing the resistance value of RBR, the LED current is increased. Generally, the output current range of AL6562AS-13 is from 0.3mA to 10mA. The maximum brightness of the LED is determined by the current flowing into the LED, so user can easily adjust the maximum brightness of the LED by changing the value of RBR. Furthermore, the AL65618 also has a variety of features for protection and accuracy, such as internal thermal shutoff and over-current protection.
