Design

Operation

When the coil is energized, the armature is attracted to the steel, spring steel, or stainless steel core of the plunger. This in turn causes the contact points of the switch to close, which completes the circuit and allows power to flow to the load. When the coil is de-energized, the armature is released from the plunger and the contact points of the switch open, breaking the circuit and cutting off power to the load.
