Common Mode Chokes

Common mode chokes, sometimes known as line filters, magnetic filters, or differential mode filters, are a type of electrical filter used to suppress or attenuate electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) generated by electrical power systems. The ALFT-03A-4 is a common mode choke which utilizes a series of coils to create a high impedance in the common mode. This high impedance helps to block the current flow caused by EMI and RFI.

The ALFT-03A-4 operates on a “common-mode” basis, which simply means that current is allowed to flow through both the hot and neutral lines of the power cable, but it is opposed. The two lines are wound together around a common core and passed through a ferrite core which acts as a magnetic barrier. In this way, even if there is some current flow in either line, it is cancelled out by the counter current in the other line.

The primary function of the ALFT-03A-4 is to reduce the amount of EMI/RFI that is generated by the electrical source. This is accomplished by its high impedance core which blocks any current difference between the hot and neutral lines. This reduces the amount of electric current that is radiated into the environment, which reduces the amount of EMI/RFI that is generated and consequently lowers susceptibility to interference from other devices in the vicinity.

The ALFT-03A-4 can be used in a variety of applications, including audio and signal processing applications, consumer electronics, medical equipment, telecommunications equipment, and automotive applications. It can be used to reduce EMI/RFI in a wide range of frequencies, from DC up to high frequency applications. The ALFT-03A-4 features a wide-range of current ratings, from 1 to 16 amps, and an operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C.
