A common mode choke, also known as a CM choke, or common mode inductor, is an electrical device used to reduce the signal level of a high frequency signal between two or more electrically isolated devices. Its purpose is to reduce the effect of common-mode noise caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI). Common-mode noise can be caused by a number of sources, including the power lines, equipment, or other devices that are nearby. ALFT-03A-8 is an example of a common-mode choke.
ALFT-03A-8 has a set of inductors wound together to form a coil. The inductors are carefully wound such that the voltage at each terminal is the same, while the currents in the inductors are out of phase. This property is known as the "passive balance" and allows the common-mode choke to reject any noise that is present at its two terminals. The ALFT-03A-8 common-mode inductor has a high operating frequency range (up to 1MHz) and a very wide band-rejection ratio (up to 50 dB).
ALFT-03A-8 common-mode chokes can be used in a variety of applications, including Ethernet, USB, serial ports, video, audio, and power electronic systems. In Ethernet and other communication networks, common-mode chokes are used to suppress the electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the network cables and reduce the crosstalk between adjacent nodes. They are also used in USB cables to reduce the EMI generated by the connections. In video systems, they are used to reduce the EMI generated by the video cables and connected devices. In power electronic systems, common-mode chokes are used to suppress EMI from the power lines, power electronics, and other sources.
The working principle of a common-mode choke is based on the property of a voltage source. When two signals of opposite polarity are applied, the common-mode current is the sum of the two signals. As this current passes through the inductor, the voltage at the terminals of the inductor is equal to the voltage of each signal, resulting in a "passive" balance. The choke then acts like a low-pass filter and reduces the levels of common-mode noise.
In short, ALFT-03A-8 is a common-mode choke designed for high frequency applications. It has a very wide band-rejection ratio and is used in many applications to reduce the effects of common-mode noise. The working principle of the common-mode choke is based on the property of a voltage source, where two signals of opposite polarity are applied, resulting in a "passive" balance which reduces the levels of common-mode noise.
