The AM26S10CDG4 is an integrated circuit that can be used to implement differential line-drivers, receivers, and transceivers utilizing balanced-line protocols. It is capable of speeds up to 1 Mbps and has a logic level-dependent power consumption level of under 6 mA. This makes the device ideal for applications requiring low-power consumption yet a maximum amount of flexibility. The device is composed of two independent line transceivers and is a step-up in speed and operating capability over its predecessor, the AM26LS10CDG.

The main application fields of the AM26S10CDG4 are in low-volume and low-speed data communication systems, such as serial communications, digital audio, and CCTV systems. The device is especially suited for implementations which require the longest transmission lines – up to 2500 ft – and supports both conventional single-ended and differential line types. The device is a superior choice for EIA-422a and EIA-485 applications. Additionally, the device supports both unbalanced- and balanced-line signal solutions.

The two driver/receivers of the AM26S10CDG4 are designed to directly interface with logic-level signals from 5V logic families such as the 74 series, and can be driven from a single 5V supply. The chip also includes a built-in status indicator, which can be used to signal transmission activity and other connection-related events. The indicator is compatible with any type of logic-level signal, including EIA-485, and is able to detect incoming signal activity even at low bit-rates.

The AM26S10CDG4 is also able to monitor itself, with a special feature known as “auto-detect.” This feature is used to detect and report any changes on the transmission line, symbolizing that not all devices connected to the line are operating at the same transmission rate. If auto-detect detects a difference between the transmission speeds, the device will act accordingly: for example, it can power-down unused parts of the device or reduce its transmission rate.

The AM26S10CDG4 is designed to optimally function as a differential line driver, receiver and transceiver. Its output stage is designed to provide voltage swings from -3V to +3V, thus making it suitable for balanced-line connections and allowing it to support both single-and two-wire line formats. The high-performance output amplifier also allows for a high degree of common-mode rejection, ensuring a low bit-error rate even when exposed to EMI and other external noise sources.

The input stage of the AM26S10CDG4 is able to detect voltage swings of +/- 2V, -3V to +3V and offers an exceptional level of protection against static-discharges, ESD, and over-voltage events. The device also features a built-in Schmitt-trigger, which allows for an improved noise-margin and the detection of very small voltage-differences. Additionally, the device can be disabled completely by driving the input to the disable pin with a logic 0.
