Application Field

AP1086KG-13 is designed to provide a current limiting PWM controller for any switching power supply like AC / DC adapter, AC / DC converter, battery charger, notebook adapter, open loop switch power supply and closed loop switch power supply. It is suitable for DC output applications of 4.5V ~ 18V, and is able to accurately limit the peak current within any range.

Working Principle

AP1086KG-13 working principle is based on its internal current mode control circuit. The controller compares sensed inductor current with a combined voltage signal from the error amplifier and the compensator, then the error signal will be amplified and sent to the internal PWM comparator. If the voltage signal of the error amplifier is higher than the compensator voltage, it will initiate a shoot-through current protection by turning off both switches at the same time. When the detected current is lower than the selected peak current, the amplifier will turn off one switch and initiate the start of the next duty cycle.

In order to meet the target peak current and reduce the effects of input voltage fluctuation, the controller integrates a peak current loop with a current sensing resistor. Additionally, the current sense resistor also serves as an adjustable cycle-by-cycle current limiting protection. It will stop the switch signals when higher than the selected maximum current and restart it after the current drop about 25% below the maximum current. With adjustable dead time to ensure minimum peak current even the duty cycle is near 0 or 100%.

By applying the external components such as resistors and error amplifier, AP1086KG-13 provides protection against over-current conditions and provides fast short-circuit response. It also provides protection against soft start, protections against over temperature and protection against VCC under voltage. All settings can be adjusted with external components.
