PMIC – LED Drivers are used to control and constant luminescent power for LED and are widely used in the market nowadays. The AP1682MTR-G1 buck-boost DC-DC regulator is one of them. This article will discuss the application field and working principle of AP1682MTR-G1.
AP1682MTR-G1 is suitable for powering LED displays, LED strips, LED drivers and other LED based electronic devices. This LED driver adopts synchronous rectification buck-boost topology, which compensates the transition of LED current while the input voltage varies by maintaining the LED VF value. It features wide input voltage range, high efficiency, low output ripple, accuracy and high stability.
The AP1682MTR-G1 has a rated input voltage from 4.5V to 45V and a stable voltage across the whole input voltage range for LED. It provides an extra 5-10V output current for powering other ICs, which does not affect the output current to the LED. The maximum output current for LED is 1.5A and can be adjusted via the EN pin. Its operating frequency is 375KHz, which gives it a high efficiency rate of up to 86% with a large input to output transmission range of 4:1.

The working principle of the AP1682MTR-G1 is based on the synchronous buck-boost DC-DC regulator architecture. The control signals set the switch duty cycles for each converter, for example, when the buck converter switch is on, the LED current flow is regulated through the inductor and the LED voltage is stabilized. When the boost converter switch is on, the LED voltage continues to increase. During regular operation, the LED current flows from the input to the output, with both the buck and the boost converters being controlled.
The buck-boost converter consists of three main components, the main MOSFET switch, the inductor, and the capacitor. When the switch is turned on, the power stored in the inductor is increased. When the switch is turned off, the stored energy is released through the LED and the capacitor. The amount of power released through the LED is determined by the duty cycle, which is set by the control signals. The polarity of the inductor and the capacitor are then reversed, charging the capacitor and releasing power of the LED.
