AP3030KTR-E1 is a current-mode PWM controller with integrated low RDS(on) N-Channel power MOSFET for driving high power LED display and lighting applications. This device is a cost-efficient solution for external high current MOSFET drivers requirements. It features a high current totem pole output and built-in drivers for a maximum of six external transistors to control large external N-channel power FETs for various application. It also has two independent Buck/Boost converter to independently control the voltage of two external strings of light source.

Application Field

The AP3030KTR-E1 provides an ideal solution for driving up to six strings of high power LED with up to hundreds of LEDs per string. It can drive series or parallel connected LEDs with different currents, which can be dimmed and regulated by a PWM signal, 0-100%. Typical applications include indoor-lighting, outdoor-lighting, automotive lighting, consumer lighting, and LED displays.

Working Principles

The AP3030KTR-E1 uses a current mode PWM signaling method to control the LED current. The current sense voltage is compared against the oscillator voltage and its associated dead-time generation circuitry to determine the total on-time for each switching period. If the potentiometer is adjusted lower than the resistor voltage, the current sense voltage will exceed the oscillator voltage sooner than normal and the switching period will be shortened, reducing the available on-time and the LED current.

The AP3030KTR-E1’s total on-time can also be dynamically updated. The Duty is adjusted based on its internal ADC sensing the current through one of the external string of LEDs. This allows for closed loop dimming and control of the LED current. The driver also provides protection against feedback from the power source to the low voltage circuit by using an internal clamp circuit to limit the high side MOSFET peak drain-to-source voltage.

The AP3030KTR-E1 provides excellent EMC performance, with internal EMI filters that minimize the need for external components and add to the driver’s cost efficiency and reliability. The driver’s wide input voltage range and high efficiency enable the solution to use a lower cost power source to drive LED strings. The IC also features a variety of protection features, further enhancing its robustness and performance.
