The AP3984MTR-G1 is a highly integrated, ultra low standby power AC/DC Converter and offline switcher targeted for offline power supplies used in local/remote industrial/communications applications. It enables very low standby power consumption while providing high performance, in both light load and full load condition. This IC also provides protection against short-circuit and open-loop faults, compliant with EN60950 safety requirements.

Application Field

The AP3984MTR-G1 can be used in a wide variety of offline applications ranging from non-isolated and isolated AC/DC converters and offline switchers for telecom, datacom, computing, industrial and consumer appliances. Typical applications include LED drivers, AC/DC adapters, auxiliary power supplies and smart meters.The IC consumes very low power in standby mode and can achieve more than 85% efficiency in full-load conditions.

Working Principle

The working principle of the AP3984MTR-G1 is based on a Peak Current Mode (PCM) control topology with integral automatic Dynamic Transformer-Resonant Reset Control (DTRC). The IC features an internal active power saving design that enables very low standby power consumption. The circuit provides an additional feature referred as soft start, which prevents high-ripple noise at initial power on. The device also provides protection against short-circuit, open-loop and active overload. A low-cost external component version of the circuit is available.

The device also includes an internal oscillator (OSC) which uses a resistor to set the switching frequency. The frequency of the IC can be adjusted by the use of an external resistor in the range of 7.5 to 33 kHz. The device also includes a shutdown input pin which allows the user to turn off the power supply from an externally generated signal.
