AP6503SP-13 application field and working principleAP6503SP-13, a DC-DC switching regulator integrated high performance power management chip, is a highly efficient 150 KHz step-down switcher for portable equipment applications. It is designed for low cost, low voltage, low quiescent current and high efficiency components. This is a high performance integrated PWM synchronous buck regulator. AP6503SP-13 belongs to PMIC (Power Management integrated Circuits), and further belongs to voltage regulators, DC DC switching regulators. It is optimized for low input and output voltage applications (6V input, 0.6V output). The switching frequency of it is 150 KHz. Due to its low input voltage and high efficiency, it is suitable for wireless communication such as mobile phones and PDAs. AP6503SP-13 works in the same way as a typical switch-mode power supply. At the beginning, a high frequency oscillator input at its pin ext.SET is used to control the internal PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) comparator with a constant on/off duty cycle like a square wave. When the control signal of the PWM comparator is a square wave, the output of the power stage MOSFET is also a square wave.The power switch MOSFET is turned on and off at a high frequency. When it is turned on, the inductor stores the energy and output capacitor acts as the output filter and stores the energy as well. When the MOSFET is turned off, the inductor acts as a reverse diode for energy discharge. The energy stored in the inductor can pass through the energy discharge route: the power stage MOSFET, the inductor, the output capacitor and the output load, forming a load voltage. The load voltage is reduced by the control circuit to the level determined by the feedback signal (FB signal) for the PWM comparator accordingly.The feedback signal is monitored by the error amplifier and then compared with the reference voltage signal (REF signal). Out of the error amplifier, the internal error signal compared to the signal from the feedback pin. According to this error signal, the internal PWM comparator adjusts the output of the power switch MOSFET and thus controls the output voltage.In order to meet the requirements of different output current, the AP6503SP-13 supports the adjustable output current limit function. The output current can be adjusted by the ext.ILIM pin. The Internal inductor current is always monitored and kept below the threshold of output current limit during the power on state.When the output voltage is changed, the AP6503SP-13 also supports the adjustable enable voltage (VIL). The enable voltage (VIL) of AP6503SP-13 can be adjusted by the ext.VREG pin. Once the voltage at the ext.VREG pin is lower than the enable voltage (VIL), the circuit will enter into sleep mode and the output current gradually drops to 0. Therefore, the AP6503SP-13 integrated high performance power management chip is suitable for low input, high efficiency and low quiescent current applications. The output current can be adjusted, output voltage is adjustable and it keeps the efficient status during power on stage. Due to all the above-mentioned features, AP6503SP-13 is widely used for portable applications like mobile phones, PDAs, and Bluetooth products and etc.
