Working Principle

The AP7315-32SA-7 linear voltage regulator works on the premise of comparing a reference voltage to the input voltage, allowing for the difference to be regulated to the desired output level. To achieve this, the regulator features an integrated error amplifier circuit which reads the voltage between the Input pin (VIN) and the Ground pin (GND). The error amplifier compares the reference voltage (REF) and the voltage on the output pin (VOUT) and adjusts the gate voltage of the pass transistor accordingly. This adjustment causes the output voltage to be regulated.The AP7315-32SA-7 provides additional features to help optimize performance, such as current limiting, thermal shutdown, and over voltage protection. The rGS pin monitors the gate voltage of the pass transistor, which is used to limit the maximum current of the pass transistor. If the current reaches its limit, then the voltage on the rGS pin is increased, thus limiting the pass transistor’s current. The AP7315-32SA-7 also incorporates an over-temperature protection circuit that monitors the die temperature of the regulator. If the die temperature exceeds a critical temperature, then the over-temperature protection circuit will shut down the regulator. Finally, the over voltage protection prevents overloads caused by input voltage supply disruptions.
