Analog power management circuits, more commonly referred to as PMICs, provide efficient electronic regulation of power supply and operational performance used in a wide range of electronic devices. PMICs are a key component to modern mobile device design. The APX809-40SAG-7 from Diodes Incorporated is an example of one such PMIC which combines an array of primary and secondary power management components into a single integrated circuit (IC).This PMIC is primarily targeted at mid-range portable consumer devices, providing both system voltage and load current regulation, as well as advanced features including temperature and over-voltage protection. The IC is built on a dual-die structure which comprises a controller IC and a supervisor IC. The controller IC is in charge of voltage regulation, while the supervisor IC provides system-level supervision, monitoring, and control.In addition to its primary task of supervising and controlling the power supply, the APX809-40SAG-7 can be used as a standalone supervisor capable of monitoring various application parameters. The supervisor also offers two programmable temperature alarms which can be used to trigger a system level action after a predetermined temperature increase has been detected.Furthermore, the integrated overvoltage protection (OVP) monitor continuously monitors the input voltage and will immediately shut down the output if the input reaches a user-defined threshold. The supervisor offers fault monitoring and reporting to the host processor, with indicators for both OV and UV conditions.The APX809-40SAG-7 provides dry connection for two reset outputs; one active-high and one active-low. The active-high reset is triggered when the input voltage is below the turn-off threshold. The active-low reset is triggered when the input voltage is above the turn-off threshold.The supervisor\'s compliance with the I²C host interface protocol allows quick and easy communication between the system processor and the PMIC. The I²C protocol allows for consecutive-address recursive write/read; a feature which can be used to send multiple write/read address codes to the controller.To sum up, APX809-40SAG-7 is a two-part integrated PMIC which provides efficient power-management solutions for mid-range devices.
