AS1158 is a digital inter-point communication protocol developed by the ARCnet Trade Association, an international organization of industrial communication users.
It is an asynchronous communication protocol designed for industrial process control, manufacturing and other real-time applications that require high reliability and speed.
AS1158 is a balanced, half-duplex, multi-master system in which masters can send messages to each other, or to one or more slaves. The protocol is based on Manchester coding and has a maximum data transmission rate of 10 Mbps. AS1158 communication is maintained by a token passing system, in which each station that wants to transmit has a turn.

AS1158 Application Field and Working Principle
AS1158 is used in a variety of industrial and home applications. In industrial applications, it can be used for remote monitoring, fault analysis, alarm monitoring and control, and process control. It is widely used in medical and dental equipment, home automation systems, and telecommunication systems. Additionally, the protocol can be used to construct Ethernet-based networks.
AS1158 is based on a half-duplex, multi-master token passing protocol. Each station that wants to transmit has a turn to use the line. A "token" is passed around the network, i.e. each station has a chance to transmit one byte of data at a time. The token circulates around the ring, so each station has a chance to transmit. The protocol is based on a symmetrical data encryption technique known as "Manchester code".
Each station, both master and slave controllers, contain two processors: a microprocessor and a communications processor. The microprocessor handles the application logic, while the communications processor handles the AS1158 protocol logic. The communications processor also controls the data input and output, and handles error detection and retransmission. In addition, the communications processor is responsible for synchronizing the token passing process between stations, and for performing flow control.
The master station sends out a message and waits for a response from the slave stations. If no response is received, an additional message can be sent by the master station. If the response is received, the master station processes the response and sends out the next command. The process is repeated until all commands have been successfully sent and received.
AS1158 also includes error detection. If a data frame is sent, but the receiving station detects an error, the failed frame is sent again. If the same error is detected three times, the station will disconnect.
AS1158 is an ideal protocol for applications that require real-time communication with minimal interference from external noise sources. It is simple enough to be implemented in a wide range of applications and is suitable for use in both industrial and home environments. It is also robust enough to be used in harsh industrial environments.
