Working Principle

The AS3729-BWLM has four main operating modes – buck, boost, charging and battery monitoring – that are closely integrated to enable efficient and safe power management.

Buck Mode

In buck mode, the AS3729-BWLM monitors battery status, and automatically selects between buck and boost modes based on the voltage of the incoming power. The buck regulator delivers a regulated output voltage of up to 20V from a 4.5V to 40V input. Because it uses synchronous rectification technology, the buck regulator also has an ultra-low quiescent current, ideal for monitoring primary and secondary batteries more accurately.

Boost Mode

In boost mode, the AS3729-BWLM drives an N-channel power MOSFET to boost the voltage level. The voltage range of the boost mode is 4.5V to 40V, and the output voltage can go up to 44V. Charging Mode

The AS3729-BWLM includes a linear charger that is able to charge LiFePO and Li-ion batteries at up to 2A, as well as a 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that allows the battery charging current to be programmed. Battery Monitoring Mode

The AS3729-BWLM has an integrated 11-bit charging control DAC, which provides a smooth transition between the buck and boost mode.
