Encoders can be used to convert analog signals or digital signals into a digital format, providing them with a digital representation.

AS5045-ASST Application Field and Working Principle

The AS5045-ASST is a surface-mount device (SMD) for providing absolute angular position data and integrated motion control solutions. It is designed for use in linear and rotary motion applications such as robotics, automation processes and motion control systems. The module can be integrated into the motor control electronics to make the system more reliable, efficient and cost effective. The AS5045-ASST is a fully integrated single-chip angular position encoder device that offers full-duplex, or single wire communication over a single serial interface.

In terms of working principle, the AS5045-ASST comprises of an analog front-end (AFE) with integrated Hall elements, plus a 12-bit ADC. The module is able to accurately measure angles up to 359° with 12-bit resolution in the digital output register. The conversion time is expected to be 1 ms or less. The angular position of the motor armature is determined by multiplying the analog output of the three Hall elements by the differential input (DI) gain settings. The DI gain is adjustable for output sensitivity and accuracy. The converted analog voltage is subsequently compared to a digital reference voltage to determine the angular position.

The AS5045-ASST offers a wide range of features to enable advanced precision motion control applications. It includes two programmable digital filters for noise and oscillation suppression, as well as an automatic power save mode. This feature reduces the current consumption of the encoder to 250 nA when inactive. Additionally, the device also has programmable pulse position modulation for improved accuracy and stability. Finally, the AS5045-ASST features a fail-safe output, where the angular position is indeterminate in the event of an error or power failure.

The AS5045-ASST encoder provides accurate absolute angle measurement for high precision robotic applications, such as in robots used for medical, industrial or military applications. It is also ideal for applications that require compact and robust motion control solutions, such as in automotive systems and in servo motor systems. The device provides the best possible position control accuracy compared to other solutions, and is also more reliable compared to non-integrated sensors.
