Working Principle

The ASCSM-16.000MHz-LR-T oscillator is based on a Sandia/Reliability/Technology (R/T) oscillator, which is a crystal-based oscillator using an AT-Cut of a single crystal quartz quartz for tuning. This oscillator consists of a quartz crystal with an AT-Cut mounted in between two electrodes for operation at a fixed frequency. On either side of the quartz crystal, the electrodes are connected to have in parallel a resistor-capacitor network (RC network) that forms the LC-tank, with the quartz oscillating in the LC-tank. This produces a precise frequency determined by the quartz itself, which is affected by temperature changes, vibration, and other environmental variables. The oscillator output frequency is also affected by the RC-network, which can be adjusted to maintain a constant frequency.The quartz crystal oscillator operates on a positive feedback principle. In the resonance zone, alternating current (AC) oscillations occur. The frequency of the oscillations is determined by the quartz crystal\'s unique frequency characteristics. The frequency of the oscillations is then controlled by the LC-tank, which determines the “Q” factor. The higher the “Q”, the more efficient the oscillations. Once the frequency is tuned to the desired level, the amplitude and shape of the oscillator waveform are also adjusted.
