PMIC - LED Drivers is a category of power management integrated circuits (ICs) that enable the control of the light emitting diode (LED). An example of this is ASL3416SHNY, which is a high-efficiency, high-performance adjustable buck-boost converter with PWM dimming. This IC has a wide input voltage range starting from 4.5V and up to 42V, delivering a continuous output current of up to 2A.
The ASL3416SHNY is suited for driving LED backlight modules in LCD TVs and monitors. It has two special features which enable it to be an ideal choice for LED backlight:
- Constant LED current mode control
- 400KHz adaptive frequency
Constant LED current mode control allows the LED current to remain stable even when the input voltage may fluctuate, keeping the brightness of the LEDs constant. The 400 KHz adaptive frequency increases the buck-boost converter’s efficiency when working with small loads.
Application field
ASL3416SHNY’s main application field is LCD TVs and monitors. It is used for driving a multiplexing arrangement of LEDs in the backlight as it can maintain a constant output current regardless of the input voltage.
It is also used in automotive applications and portable electronics such as laptops and smartphones, both of which require a stable current for the efficient operation of the display. The device is also useful for industrial applications like backlight in information displays.
Working principle
ASL3416SHNY works on the PWM regulation principle. It consists of both a buck and a boost converter connected in a buck-boost arrangement. The Wide Pulse Control Technology employed by the device is used to reduce the switching loss, while the adaptive frequency control adjusts the switching frequency to a rate as low as 200 kHz automatically when it is under light loading.
The device regulates the output voltage by taking the feedback signal from the resistive divider connected across the output voltage. The resistive divider\'s output voltage is compared with an internal 1.23V reference voltage and produces an error signal at the error amp compensation terminal. The error signal is then passed to the PWM logic block, which generates the switching duty cycle depending on the error signal.
The ASL3416SHNY is also able to work with a PWM dimming signal of up to 24V for brightness control. The dimming signal is tied to the DIM pin and is then passed through the internal comparator, where it is compared with the internal reference voltage of 200mV. The output of the comparator is then passed to the PWM logic block, where the switching duty cycle is regulated accordingly.
