PTC Resettable Fuses, also known as Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) Fuses or Multi-layer Polymer Fuses, are a type of current-limiting device. ASMD250F-2 Working Principle
The working principle of the ASMD250F-2 is that it is constantly monitoring the current, and will automatically open the circuit if the current exceeds its rated current. When the current is removed,the PTC immediately resets and the circuit is re-closed.
The PTC Resettable Fuse consists of three main components: a stator, a PTC thermistor, and a fuse element. The stator, which is the core part of the ASMD250F-2, is composed of two separate layers. The outer layer is made of a high temperature resistant insulation material, and contains the resin-molded PTC thermistor and the fuse element. The inner layer is composed of high temperature resistant copper tape, which is connected to the thermistor and the fuse element, creating a complete circuit.
The PTC thermistor is the key component of the ASMD250F-2. It normally has high impedance in low ambient temperature and a low resistance when the temperature rises. When the ambient temperature increases, it enables the current to flow through the circuit, which is known as the “On-State.”
When the ambient temperature and therefore the thermistor further increase, the resistance increases and blocks the current flowing through the circuit, which is known as the “Off-State,” or “ Thermal Trip,” and disconnects the circuit.
As a result, the failure of the circuit can be avoided by applying the PTC thermistor of the ASMD250F-2. The PTC thermistor is able to repeat the ON-OFF-ON cycle according to the corresponding temperature; therefore, the ASMD250F-2 can protect the circuit accurately and reliably in the long-term.
