AT24C01-10SI is a 2-wire serial EEPROM memory circuit by Atmel, ideal for use in battery-operated application field with low-power consumption. It has an I²C serial interface and is available in SO8 and TSSOP8 packages. There are two EEPROM products with different densities that come with this I²C serial interface: AT24C01-10SI (1K) and AT24C02-10SI (2K). All AT24C01-10SI is byte-writeable, meaning every byte is independent, and can be accessed for read or write individually.

The AT24C01-10SI feature includes a 2-wire serial interface, 1 K of EEPROM memory, and is available in commercial temperature range (0 to 70°C). The device’s 1024-bit of EEPROM memory is organized in 16 pages of 8 bytes each, with a 2-byte, self-incrementing address pointer. The device offers a choice of two write-protection methods, block write-protect or complete write-protect.

The working principle of the AT24C01-10SI is as follows. It stores data in pins of a semiconductor chip, which is either a small metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS)-based field-effect transistor (FET) memory array or a bipolar complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) memory array. Data gets written to the chip by passing current through the chip gates, which then turn on or off and activate the transistors representing the bits and bytes of data. When a low to high state is detected, either by an input pin or an internal voltage source, the ROM is programmed by adding an extra transistor between the gate and drain of a transistor, representing a certain bit in the memory.

The AT24C01-10SI device is usually used for the applications of microcontroller-based systems such as software configuration, telephone toll dialers and portable telephone applications. Its low power consumption and fast access time make it an ideal choice for such application fields.

The device is programmed and erased by serial write-turn-around cycles. When it is written to, the data is first locally stored in an internal memory buffer. Then, the data is transferred to the EEPROM and after the write cycle is complete, the status register will be cleared. The device can be hardware and software write-protected.
