It works on the principle of FLASH (Ferroelectric Layer Super-Lattice), which is a modified version of the MOS technology. FLASH is a type of floating gate which is use to store electrons that determine whether or not the current is switched on.The AT26F004-SSU uses two voltage levels, a program voltage and an erase voltage, to switch on and off the current in the flash memory cell. When a specific voltage is applied to the flash memory, electrons are transferred from the channel to the floating gate and the cell is programmed. When the erase voltage is applied to the floating gate, electrons are shifted back from the gate to the channel, thereby erasing the cell.The AT26F004-SSU also has a built-in controller and five bytes of secure authentication data, which provide extra security to the device. This allows the secure exchange of information between the user and the device. In order to ensure reliable operation, the memory has various features such as error detection and correction, Wear-Leveling, Auto Refresh, and Data Retention.
