The ATMEGA8-16MUR is a member of the advanced 8-bit AVR microcontroller familywhich include powerful instructions, C-compiler friendly development, enhancedI/O and peripheral capabilities as well as low power consumption. It is a veryversatile device providing a wide range of application fields; from highperformance robotics to low power systems like battery operated systems. Thismicrocontroller is also used in car and home automation systems, consumerappliance products, data acquisition and control systems, security systems,wireless sensing and many more.
The ATMEGA8-16MUR contains 16K bytes of programmable Flash memory, which canbe programmed and reprogrammed in-system using the JTAG interface. It alsoincorporates 1 K bytes of data EEPROM and 512 bytes of SRAM. It features anInternal Oscillator (which can be configured to run from 8 Mhz to 16 Mhz) and32 IO Pins, 8-Channel 10-bit A/D Conversion and three Timer/Counters. It alsohas a wide range of communication peripherals such as Serial USART, SPI and TWIas well as internal modules for analog comparator and event control system.
This device supports several programming languages such as AVR-GCC, C andBASIC. On-chip debugging is available using the JTAG interface. TheATMEGA8-16MUR is enclosed in a 28-lead SDIP package, with a footprintmeasuring 7.62x10.16mm and its operating temperature range is 0-70 Centigrade.
Using this microcontroller, various applications can be developed, includingremote controlled toys, mobile robots, home automation, car control systems,medical instrumentation and industrial machine control. It is a suitablesolution for embedded control applications where a low cost and low powerCPU is required.
The ATMEGA8-16MUR works on the concept of CPU - Central Processing Unit, whichis used to execute a set of instructions or a given program. The CPUcommunicates with the device\'s peripherals as well as external memory, via themicrocontroller\'s bus system. The main components of the CPU are theinstruction decode unit, pre-fetch unit, execution unit, ALU (ArithmeticLogic Unit) and the control logic. The ALU is responsible for data processingoperations, such as adding, subtracting, comparison etc, while the ControlLogic controls the flow of execution within the CPU and also performsinterrupt handling.
The ATMEGA8-16MUR also features an on-chip bootloader which allows it to beprogrammed directly through a serial port without the need for any additionalhardware. This bootloader is activated when the microcontroller is reset andallows the user to upload their program directly into the memory of themicrocontroller.
