The ATSAM4L-EK is a versatile, low-cost evaluation system that enables designers to quickly evaluate features of ARM-based microcontrollers and DSPs. It is built around the Atmel | SMART SAM4L Cortex-M4F-based microcontroller, exemplifying the features of the SAM4L series of microcontrollers for functional operation. The system provides an ATSAM4L-EK baseboard, which is supported by Atmel Studio 6, drivers, sample programs, board schematics, and a user guide.

Application Field

ATSAM4L-EK is mainly used in designs of microcontrollers and DSPs. It supports most of the Atmel | SMART ARM Cortex-M4F based microcontroller families, allowing designers to easily evaluate, develop and prototype projects. Working Principle

The ATSAM4L-EK is based on an Atmel | SMART SAM4L ARM Cortex-M4F microcontroller. It features dual clock systems: a High-Frequency internal clock (32MHz) and an Ultra-Low-Frequency sub-system clock (32.768kHz). The board also consists of a variety of peripherals and power management capabilities optimized for low power operation.

The ATSAM4L-EK board includes a set of peripheral modules to act as a bus. This includes USART, I2C, SPI, PIO, DMA controllers, advanced timer modules, and more. This architecture provides a flexible interconnect between peripherals and allows complex data transfer from one peripheral to another.

The Advanced Peripheral Bus (APB) is supported by the ATSAM4L-EK, which enables designers to easily add all kinds of features and capabilities to their project. The APB features an optimized width for communication and a common programming interface, allowing designers to quickly and easily configure their design.

The ATSAM4L-EK also features an integrated Power Management Unit (PMU) to facilitate low power operation. The PMU has been designed to automatically control the clock and power states of the microcontroller, enabling the microcontroller to stay in the lowest power state while performing various tasks. The PMU also supports a range of power management features such as voltage scaling, power monitoring, and thermal protection.

The ATSAM4L-EK also features an integrated Security Module (SecM). This module provides security features such as an isolated hardware root of trust, encryption for secure communication, and secure boot. These features, combined with secure elements available on the board, provide a secure platform to ensure the integrity of the data transmitted over the system.

In addition, the ATSAM4L-EK features an integrated debugger port for debugging and programming. This enables designers to quickly and easily debug their projects and troubleshoot hardware.
