TVS - Diodes
Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes are mainly used to suppress transient voltage caused by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). An ESD can cause permanent damage to digital devices from both its current and voltage component. The ATV15C180J-HF is a high performance 150-watt unidirectional Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) TVS diode with a fast response. This device is designed specifically to protect high-speed data lines from voltage transients induced by ESD, electrical fast transients (EFT’s)and surges.
Application Field of ATV15C180J-HF
The ATV15C180J-HF is versatile and can be used in various applications due to its high pulse power capabilities. This device is widely used in high-speed data transmission lines such as HDMI, CAT7 LAN lines, USB and even VOIP phone lines. It is especially useful in automotive applications since it is able to endure up to 8,000 volts and handle up to 8,000 amps surge. Additionally, it is ideal for high frequency applications such as RF digital communication and much more.
Working Principle of ATV15C180J-HF
The working principle behind the ATV15C180J-HF is based on Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) technology. MOVs are voltage-dependent resistors with a high non-linear resistive characteristic. They respond very rapidly to transient over-voltage and become short-circuits to provide an excellent performance in suppressing the voltage. The ATV15C180J-HF is a bi-directional MOV device. It is designed with two positive voltage suppressing elements that add protection against both commonly seen as well as reverse polarity transient over-voltages.
When a surge hits the MOV, its resistance drops dramatically which allows the surge current to bypass the sensitive load. This is especially useful since it prevents the surge current from causing any damage to the load equipment. The fast response time of the device prevents arc-over as well as flash-over damage resulting in maximum surge protection. This nature of the ATV15C180J-HF ensures that it remains conductive during normal operation, preventing any switching or thermal noise from occurring.
In addition to its surge protection capability, the ATV15C180J-HF also has a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to +150°C. This ensures it can function even in the harshest environments without any deterioration of its performance. Furthermore, it has a low reverse leakage current of ≤5µA when clamping voltage is reached to improve the power distribution of the system.
