The ATXMEGA128D3-AU is an 8-bit microcontroller offered in a VQFN-64-Zed package. It features very low active power consumption, 32 KB of in-system self-programmable Flash, 2 KB of EEPROM, 4 KB of SRAM, 256 Bytes of Boot Code Section, 64-kB bootloader section and Dual-panel synchronized I/O-ports for higher data throughput. The ATXMEGA128D3-AU is part of the AVR microcontroller family and is typically used in embedded applications with low pin count requirements and a low active power.

The embedded applications of the ATXMEGA128D3-AU are up to this date far from numerous, but can include industrial controllers, process control systems, automated gates, automated commercial point systems and CNC machines. Its most prominent feature that makes the microcontroller adequate for these types of applications is its very low active power consumption. The device can remain in Power-down mode (PD) when not in use, which allows it to enter standby state and only consume 600 uA in Power Reduction (PR) mode while still maintaining the register content in safe.

Additionally, the ATXMEGA128D3-AU have 2 Dual-panel synchronised I/O-ports, an SPI and the USART modules, the latter designed with features and device configurations to reduce the workload and keep the programmer's code and design as efficient as possible. Apart from an array of communication features, the microcontroller brings key features focused on data optimisation, with Memory Enhancement technology that provides higher core performance and better performance/area ratio from the Flash program memory. In addition, it has an internal Programmable Logic Unit that allows more flexible and easier implementation of MCU peripherals.

The working principle of the ATXMEGA128D3-AU is based on the Harvard architecture, which includes separate memory for instructions and data. It has a CPU with a Harvard architecture, 16 general-purpose registers, a 32-bit wide data bus and an 8-bit program counter. It has an internal 128 KB program memory and 4K of RAM, as well as a four-channel peripheral bus and an eight-channel timer system.

The Atmel ATXMEGA128D3-AU has several associated clock sources - an internal 2MHz oscillator and one external oscillator, an internal RC oscillator and four external crystal oscillators. The CPU's 16 8-bit general purpose data registers offer sequencer and bit manipulation as well as memory and register assigns. The device has four main interrupts with up to 32 possible interrupt sources, plus four newly introduced auxiliary interrupts that are located in peripheral modules.

The ATXMEGA128D3-AU is programmable through an in system self-programmable flash memory or an external programming tool. In system self-programmable flash memory reduces programming time, whereas the external programming tool provides maximum performance and wizard-style, real-time chip emulation. Additionally, it also has a built-in safety feature, a Non-volatile Memory Space Protection Scheme (NMSP) that can be set up to prevent accidental and unauthorized changes in program memory.

ATXMEGA128D3-AU depends on Atmel AVR 8-bit RISC processor to provide outstanding performance, low power consumption and advanced User Interface.The microcontroller facilitates optimal operation with the help of highly configurable peripherals and with advanced power management. By using the appropriate companion tools, AVR tools, it is possible to set up the microcontroller for advanced real-time schedules and get the most out of it in power management and Energy Profiling.

ATXMEGA128D3-AU is an easy-to-utilize microcontroller making it suitable for multiple application fields. Its unique low power consumption of 600 uA in PD (Power Reduction) mode allows for devices to stay in standby state while still securing the register content. The innovative memory system along with the internal 128 KB program memory and 4K of RAM allow for a maximum utilization of the device. Its features, such as the USART module, the internal programmable logic unit and the non-volatile memory space protection scheme, make the microcontroller easy to configure while still securing the program data.
