1. Describe

The Atmel AVR XMEGA is a family of low-power, high-performance and peripheral-rich 8/16-bit microcontrollers Based on AVR-enhanced RISC architecture. By executing instructions in a single clock cycle, the AVR XMEGA devices achieve CPU throughput approaching one million instructions per second (MIPS) Megahertz, allowing system designers to optimize power consumption and processing speed. The AVR CPU combines a rich instruction set with 32 general-purpose working registers. All 32 registers are Direct connection to the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), allowing access to two separate registers in one A single instruction, executed in one clock cycle. The resulting architecture achieves greater code efficiency while Throughput is many times faster than traditional single accumulator or CISC-based microcontrollers. AVR XMEGA A3U devices offer the following features: In-system programmable flash memory with read and write capabilities; internal EEPROM and SRAM; quad-channel DMA controller, eight-channel event system and Programmable multi-level interrupt controller, 50 general-purpose I/O lines, 16-bit real-time counter (RTC); seven Flexible 16-bit timer/counter with compare and PWM channels; seven USARTs; two two-wire serial interfaces (TWI); 1 full-speed USB 2.0 interface; three Serial Peripheral Interfaces (SPI); AES and DES encryption engine; two 16-channel, 12-bit ADCs with programmable gain; one 2-channel 12-bit DAC; four analog Comparator (AC) with Windowed Mode; Programmable Watchdog Timer with Independent Internal Oscillator; Accurate Internal oscillator with PLL and prescaler; and programmable brown-out detection. Provides the Programming and Debug Interface (PDI), a fast, two-pin interface for programming and debugging. These devices also have IEEE standards. 1149.1 Compatible JTAG interface, also available for boundary scanning, on-chip debugging and programming. ATx devices have five software-selectable power-saving modes. Idle mode stops the CPU while Allows SRAM, DMA controller, event system, interrupt controller and all peripherals to continue operate. Power-down mode preserves SRAM and register contents, but stops oscillator, disables All other functions until next TWI, USB resume, pin change interrupt or reset. In power saving mode, Asynchronous real-time counters continue to run, allowing applications to maintain a timer base while the rest Device is sleeping. In standby mode, the external crystal keeps running while the rest Device is sleeping. This allows fast startup from an external crystal, combined with low power consumption consume. In Extended Standby mode, both the primary oscillator and the asynchronous timer continue to run. To further reduce power consumption, the peripheral clock for each individual peripheral can be chosen as Stop in active mode and idle sleep mode. Atmel provides a free QTouch library for embedding capacitive touch button, slider and wheel functionality into AVR microcontroller.
