Introduction

AZ1117D-5.0TRE1 is a low dropout two-terminal linear voltage regulator featured with low quiescent current, excellent line and load regulation, high ripple rejection and current limit protection. It is designed to provide good regulation of output voltage over a wide range of load current conditions.

Application field

AZ1117D-5.0TRE1 is useful for applications where small size, low heat dissipation and high current are desired, such as consumer handheld devices, laptop computers, cell phones and other portable consumer products that require input voltages from 1.5V to 5.5V. Its wide operating temperature could cover from -25°C to 85°C, while the very low quiescent current in the range of 15 μA to 120 μA could save the power consumption of the system.

Working principle

Working as a linear voltage regulator, AZ1117D-5.0TRE1 is featured with two main sections. One section is the voltage reference, which establishes the target output voltage. The other one is the power pass element, which supplies to the output the required currents.The internal reference section is a bandgap voltage reference that produces a stable 1.195V voltage reference over the entire temperature range. The power pass element is an N-channel MOSFET, which delivers the output current. The gate voltage of the MOSFET is controlled by an error amplifier in order to have an output voltage close to the reference voltage. The general linear regulator works in the following way:1. When the output voltage is below the expected value, the error amplifier decreases the gate voltage of the MOSFET, allowing more current flow; 2. When the output voltage is above the expected value, the error amplifier increases the gate voltage of the MOSFET, reducing the current flow; 3. The voltage difference between the input pin and the output pin is the drop-out voltage, which is defined as the minimum difference between the input and output voltages that the regulator can sustain a specific load current at a specific ambient temperature.
