Working Principle

The AZ23B20-E3-08 is a dual discrete Zener diode array designed to provide voltage regulation. The device contains two diodes connected in series and each diode has anodes connected to common, and independent cathodes, which create a resistive-voltage clamp under Zener conduction. When an over voltage event arises and surpasses the set reverse breakdown voltage of the diode, the junction conducts, clamping the voltage between the common and the cathode. This is known as Zener breakdown.

This diode can be trimmed to set the breakdown voltage, which is very useful for achieving a more specific voltage regulation. This is done by increasing or decreasing the turn ration for one of the series diodes. This can be done by either using a variable precision ratio multi turn rheostat or a resistor divider network.
