Working Principle

A PTC resettable fuse has two contacts that are electrically connected to each other by a special layer of material with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC). When the circuit carries current, the resistance of this layer increases, limiting the current and heat normally produced by an overcurrent. As long as the current is limited, the heat produced by the fuse remains below a pre-defined threshold and the fuse does not open. However, if the current ever exceeds the safe limit, the heat produced by the overcurrent will increase, causing the resistance of the PTC layer to increase exponentially, which decreases the current to a much lower level. This low current is insufficient to maintain the high temperature, so the fuse will trip and open the circuit.Once the fuse has tripped, it will slowly cool down, allowing the resistance of the PTC layer to gradually return to its original state. At this point, the fuse can be reset, allowing the circuit to function again as normal.
