The inputs are designated as non-inverting (positive) and inverting (negative). The output is the difference between the two inputs multiplied by a gain which is specified in the operational amplifier’s datasheet. The gain is typically set with a resistive divider between the two input pins.The non-inverting input of the operational amplifier is biased by a bias voltage (Vb) which is usually provided either internally within the operational amplifier or externally. The bias voltage is provided in order to ‘push’ the input voltages to the midpoint of the supply rails to keep the output from saturating and distorting due to excessive input voltage.In order to obtain the desired gain or magnitude of the output voltage, the gain of the operational amplifier must be determined. The gain is calculated by dividing the feedback resistance (Rf) by the input resistance (Ri). The output from the operational amplifier is a replica of the difference between the two inputs multiplied by the gain. In many applications, the output is then fed into another device or circuit.
