Variable capacitance diodes, or varicaps, are an emerging technology that has been gaining ground in recent years as an effective and cost-efficient solution for electronic designs that require increased capacitance. They are often referred to as varactors, which is an acronym for "variable capacitance sandwich." These diodes are comprised of two layers of semiconductor material (usually aluminum, silicon, or gallium arsenide) that are separated by a thin dielectric material (typically antimony sulfide). They provide a range of capacitance values from very small levels through to very large values.

The BB179B,135 is a type of varicap diode. It is a small-signal varicap diode used for tuned radio-frequency (RF) circuits and has a capacitance range of 0.9 pF to 4.7 pF. Varicap diodes also find use in radio transceivers, where they are used to couple signals between stages. Other applications include audio amplifiers, RF circuits, and filters as well as oscillators and pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) circuits.
