The BC373G transistor is a general-purpose bipolar junction transistor (BJT). It falls within a family of transistors known as the BC3xx range, which was created by Texas Instruments in 1968. Applications of the BC373G transistor include signal handling, switching, and general amplification purposes. It consists of two types of semiconductor material such as P-type and N-type and the arrangement of these materials creates three terminals: the base (B) the collector (C) and the emitter (E). It also has three basic regions of operation saturation, cut off and active.The BJT works on the principle of an electric current traveling from the emitter to the collector. The current is regulated by the base. In order for the current to flow between the emitter and the collector, the base-emitter voltage must be kept below 0.7Volt. When the base-emitter junction is kept reverse-biased, then it is said to be in cut-off region and no current will flow between the emitter and the collector. When the voltage between the base and emitter junction is increased and exceeded 0.7 Volt, the transistor enters into the active region and a current is again allowed to flow between the emitter and the collector. This is known as saturation region. The BC373G transistor works on the same principle as any other BJT, but with a slightly higher current rating. It has a slightly wider range of uses due to its slightly higher current rating than its predecessors. The BC373G is suitable for both AC or DC loads, and depending on the trigger voltage different types of circuits can be designed. It is mainly used in applications such as amplifiers, rheostats, audio systems, relay switching circuits, lamp light dimmer circuits, solar cells and hot cathode ballasts.The previous generations of the BC3xx family of transistors had a lower current rating and thus limited use. The introduction of the BC373G changed the game as it was able to provide higher currents and a wider range of uses.
