BCV71,215 is a type of PNP transistor and belongs to a family of single bipolar junction transistors (BJTs). While the base has one control lead, these transistors usually come in three leads comprising of the collector, base and emitter. Developed by STMicroelectronics, this device offers a high bandwidth of up to 1.2GHz and a low noise figure of 1.2dB. Suitable for RF, audio, digital and analog designs, it can also be used in audio, data transmission and video switching.
The PNP transistor is the opposite of an NPN transistor and is a current source device. It works by having electrons held in the emitter-base junction while the application of current in the base lead influences the rate of electrons moving from the emitter to the collector. The current leaving the collector is the opposite type - holes - to the emitter current.
Moreover, the base current is always lower than the collector current as a maximum of 0.95 current gains doesn’t exist. This is unlike an NPN transistor which operates on the combination of “negative feeds” and the avalanche mode. Operation is unaffected by large temperature variations and can be in the range of -65°C to 175°C without facing any issues.
It should also be noted that its collector-emitter voltage is low in comparison to others in its family. With its low transition frequency of 100MHz, it is suitable for digital circuit applications. In addition, its low standing noise of 0.7RMS makes it a popular choice for audio noise complement. A high output power of 120mW can be achieved with a supply voltage of 6V making it ideal for small DC to DC converters.
Most importantly, the BCV71,215 offers a high quality 3dB bandwidth of 1.2GHz. This makes it suitable for higher frequency switchable amplifier applications and other power amplifiers involving wireless geolocation systems. In short, due to its quality engineering and performance efficiency, the BCV71,215 PNP transistor is a popular choice among engineers in the electronics and communication industry.
