Working Principle of Film Capacitors

A film capacitor works using the same principle as any other capacitor; two conductive surfaces with a dielectric material between them. The difference here is that a film capacitor uses a very thin plastic film as the dielectric material. This film is then rolled into a cylinder shape and is then used as the body of the capacitor.

When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, an electric field is created in the dielectric material. This electric field allows electrons to flow from one plate to the other and so create a current in the circuit. The strength of the electric field and therefore the current is determined by the capacitance of the capacitor; the capacitance of a film capacitor is determined by the area of the plates, the thickness of the dielectric film and the type of dielectric used.

Film capacitors have excellent characteristics in terms of frequency response, temperature performance, and reliability. They also have high volumetric, thermal, and stability. Capacitance ratings range from 0.001uF to 1000uF with voltage ratings from 25V to 5000V and surge capabilities up to 6000V.
