Film Capacitors
BFC237862273 is a film capacitor, which is a type of capacitor that uses a thin dielectric polymer film as the electrolyte instead of the liquid electrolyte used in a traditional wet electrolytic capacitor. Film capacitors are well known for their small size, low ESR (equivalent series resistance), tight tolerances, high ripple current, strong consistency, low self-induced noise, low cost, low noise, low DF (dissipation factor), and low leakage current. Film capacitors are used in a wide range of applications, including audio equipment, lighting, medical equipment, and telecommunication systems.
Application Field
Film capacitors have found numerous applications in the consumer, commercial, and military electronics markets. They are often used as signal couplers, pulse shapers, cross-overs for loudspeakers, and high-frequency switching circuits. They are also used for smoothing and decoupling circuits in power supplies, snubber circuits, and active filters.
Film capacitors are useful for providing noise suppression in circuits because they act as an electrical "filter". They are also useful for DC filtering and surge protection as they have less leakage current and a better temperature coefficient than other varieties of capacitors.
Working Principle
The capacitor consists of two conductive surfaces separated by a thin dielectric film. When an electric potential is applied to the two conductive surfaces, an electric field is generated in the dielectric film that creates a capacitance in the circuit. The capacitance equals the product of the area of the conductive surface, dielectric constant of the film, and the distance between the two conductive surfaces.
When a current passes through the capacitor, some of the electric charge is stored in the dielectric film, forming a layer of electric dipoles that produce an electric field. As more current passes through the capacitor, the electric dipoles become more polarized and accumulate additional charge until the entire dielectric film is saturated. At this point the capacitance of the capacitor reaches its maximum value.
Film capacitors also have a low DF (dissipation factor) compared to other types of capacitors. This means that less of the energy that is stored in the film capacitor is lost as heat in the form of dielectric hysteresis losses. This makes film capacitors a good choice for applications where low noise is needed or where a low power consumption is desired.
An advantage of a film capacitor over other types of capacitors is its ability to maintain a consistently high capacitance-voltage product over a wide range of voltage and temperature. The maintained C-V product means that the capacitance value of the capacitor will remain relatively constant over a wide operating range. This can be especially beneficial in applications where there is significant variation in temperature and voltage.
