Working Principle

Film capacitors are composed of two conductive surfaces, each of which is covered with a special dielectric film. When a voltage is applied, both layers of aluminum or copper film become electrically charged and form an electrostatic field. This field, in turn, generates an electrostatic force, which deflects the two metal surfaces together. This creates a changes of capacitance as the two surfaces approach each other. The two metal layers can be wound in a tubular shape, around a plastic or ceramic core material for enhanced sidewall compliance. The core material typically includes ceramic, plastic or rubber which isolates the two metal layers. The core also creates an air gap, to ensure that the two metal layers don’t touch.
