Film capacitors, also called plastic film capacitors, feature a plastic film dielectric topped with metal electrodes. One of the most widely used types of capacitors, these are commonly used for filtering and energy storage applications. One of the more common film capacitors is the BFC238680394.

The BFC238680394 film capacitor consists of a polyester plastic film capacitor may have either a long-life or general-purpose dielectric with a DC working voltage of 160 to 250 volts. This type of capacitor is suitable for use in operations such as: power supplies, measuring instruments, industrial equipment circuits, oscillators, and filter circuits.

The working principle of a film capacitor is based on the idea of dielectric relaxation. When a voltage is applied to a capacitor with a dielectric between the two electrical plates, the dielectric material is polarized like a magnet would be, and stores electrical energy. When the voltage is reversed, the dielectric material relaxes/discharges the energy which was stored in the dielectric material.

When DC voltage is applied across a film capacitor, an electric field is created between the two plates. The electric field composed of electrostatic energy causes the dielectric material to become polarized in a manner similar to two magnets with opposing poles that attract each other; in the case of the capacitor, the positive and negative charges create an attraction across the dielectric layer.

When AC current flows through the capacitor, the initially charged electrical plates exchange charge with each other through the dielectric layer. During a cycle of the AC current, when the current reverses direction, some of the electrical energy is dissipated, while some of the energy is held in the dielectric film until the charges on the plates are equal. This is called dielectric relaxation, and this is what makes film capacitors effective for AC filtering and energy storage.
