Motion Sensors - IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units) are key components in sensor systems used in various fields. The BMI055 is a small, low power, high performance 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) which includes a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, and aspects of a digital motion processor (DMP). BMI055 Application Field

BMI055 Working Principle
The BMI055 IMU operates by detecting and measuring acceleration (linear/gravity), angular rate (degrees/s) and/or magnetic field in three axes. The accelerometer measures linear acceleration while the gyroscope measures the angular rate. These measurements are combined to achieve an improved attitude accuracy when used in air vehicles, robots and other mechanical systems. The BMI055 has its internal Digital Motion Processor (DMP) to process accelerometer and gyroscope signals to provide output in the form of quaternions, Euler angles and so on. The output of following algorithms can be achieved by internally calculations in the DMP: tilt angle, yaw, pitch, roll rotation, gravity vector, and linear acceleration.
In addition, vibration monitoring can be achieved by the BMI055 IMU. In vibration monitoring the accelerometer measure the vibration samples while the gyroscope measure the angular motion in the form of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Finally, the measurements of both accelerometer and gyroscope are combined to identify the position and motion of any system.
The BMI055 IMU is highly reliable and energy-efficient which makes it suitable for advanced motion-sensing applications. Its small size, low power consumpion, high-performance analog and digital interfaces makes it easy to integrate into existing systems.
