DC-DC converters are devices that convert direct current (DC) from a source of varying voltage to a higher or lower DC voltage level. BP5222A is a new type of DC-DC converter developed by Philips, which achieves excellent results in terms of efficiency, power density and cost. It is designed for use in high-power and low-voltage applications such as bus voltage regulators, telecom power systems, notebooks, PDA, mobile phones and automotive systems.
The BP5222A converter uses Synchronous Rectifying Buck (SRB) topology with a dual synchronous rectifier in a 2.5-V voltage regulator to achieve excellent results in terms of efficiency, power density and cost. Its high-current design allows it to deliver up to 10A at a wide input voltage range from 3V to 20V, which is suitable for a wide variety of applications. The output voltage range of this device is adjustable from 0.8V to 1.5V. It has integrated short-circuit protection, overvoltage protection and over-temperature protection functions and is also available in a compact 8-lead package.
The unique working principle of BP5222A is based on the concept of synchronous rectification, which is an integrated switching controlled rectifier. Unlike the traditional diode rectifier circuit, the SRB rectifier is made up of two transistors. When the transistors are in conduction modes, the synchronous rectifier applies shunts and directs the majority of the current between the input and the output, and thereby, increases the efficiency of the device.
The BP5222A also has an active switching control system which can effectively reduce the switching losses and reduce the output ripple. The integrated control logic will select the optimal switching frequency for each application. Also, the dynamic response of this device to changing loads is excellent, making it much more suitable for applications that require quick response from the power supply. Moreover, the variable switching frequency allows the device to reduce noice generated during the switching process.
