PMIC - Battery Management

The BQ20Z70PWRG4 is a multi-chemistry battery gas gauge IC designed for single-cell workstation and notebook battery packs. This package consists of fuel gauge and charge protection circuits. The BQ20Z70PWRG4 has a direct connection to the lithium-ion cells, as well as to all components interfering charge pump, switching, and linear regulators, enabling the system to be charged by the adapter or USB port. With the built-in Coulomb counter, the device periodically reads the current into or out of the cells and intelligently estimates the remaining capacity via the patented ModelGauge m5 algorithm which takes into account the behavior of the cells over time. This algorithm provides the most accurate battery capacity information available.The BQ20Z70PWRG4 is a battery management device in the PMIC - Battery Management category, meaning that it provides power control, management and distribution of the main power going to the system\'s battery. It is a single-cell gauge and protection device for 4-series Li-Ion/Li-Pol batteries using the SMBus or I2C communications interface, along with integrated power delivery. The BQ20Z70PWRG4 is made up of four main components - a dedicated 32-bit processor, a charge pump, a charger/controller, and a fuel gauge. When the battery is connected via AC, USB or any other charging source, the controller ensures that the charge is supplied at a safe, low level initially to prevent overcharging of the battery. Once the battery is safely charged up to a predetermined level, the controller switches the charge current to a higher level to quickly charge the battery to full capacity.The fuel gauge helps to maintain an accurate estimation of the remaining capacity of the battery by constantly tracking current flowing in and out of the cells. The integrated signal conditioning algorithm keeps track of the absolute state of charge of the battery, and the system is able to adjust itself according to the battery\'s changing characteristics. The BQ20Z70PWRG4 package contains several integrated safety features that help to keep the battery operating safely and reliably. It protects the battery from overvoltage and overcurrent conditions, automatically charging and discharging the battery in accordance with the manufacturer\'s specifications. Additionally, the device can detect if a cell is inherently weak or malfunctioning, and automatically disable that cell fromuse.
