Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits are a great way to experiment with various components, and observe and measure their behavior. The BQ27501EVM (Evaluation Module) is one such board that allows you to evaluate TI’s BQ27510 Li-Ion Fuel Gauge IC. The BQ27510 provides a single-chip, integrated system solution for monitoring the energy level of a Li-Ion battery, including charge or discharge rate tracking, authentication of battery pack and software upgradability.
The BQ27501EVM has been designed to measure up to two Li-Ion rechargeable cells, current, voltage, soc (State of Charge) and soh (State of Health) of the battery. Users can also take advantage of features such as battery authentication, embedded-in safety alerts, battery charge current and voltage protection and many more.
The BQ27501EVM has a wide range of applications and can be used for fast charging, single cell phone or portable device battery monitoring, and automotive battery monitoring. In the automotive battery monitoring application, the EVM board can measure and display voltage, current, and temperature of the battery in real time, providing detailed information for the vehicle user. The Fuel Gauge IC also has embedded safety features to protect the battery from rapid charging or various other problems.
The BQ27501EVM includes all the necessary components for integrating the BQ27510, such as a smart LED/LCD display, a triple input voltage regulator, three SMD resistors, an I2C C port, a serial port, and a two cell Li-Ion battery. All the components of the board are soldered, so the user does not need to build the board separately. The EVM board is also powered using a 5V USB port.
The working principle of the BQ27501EVM board is based on the BQ27510 IC, which combines a fuel-gauging algorithm with a configurable safety and authentication feature. The BQ27510 IC is based on the TI ‘single-chip Li-Ion fuel gauge’ which is able to accurately estimate the remaining charge in Li-Ion batteries and measure other technical parameters. The IC can also configure various safety and authentication features, allowing the user to use for different applications depending on the battery being used.
The IC includes two operational modes, the linear mode and the reduced mode. In linear mode, cell voltage, current and temperature are measured and reported. In Reduced Mode, current is not measured but all other features remain. The remaining capacity of the battery is calculated depending on the mode used by the IC. The IC also offers a protection against overcharging, discharging and other abuse conditions.
The BQ27510 is also equipped with an authentication feature, allowing users to ensure that the battery pack they are using is valid and properly functioning. This feature is typically used in the automotive industry, where it is used to protect battery packs against intentional battery destruction, or unintentional connection to unsuitable chargers. This authentication feature is used to compare the ‘unique secret’ codes embedded on the BQ27510 and the battery pack, which are both programmed upon initialization.
