Thyristors - TRIACs are semiconductor devices that are widely used in electronics due to their ability to switch relatively large loads of current or power with a low power input signal. One of the oldest and most popular such devices is the BT131-600,412 Thyristor. This article will discuss the application field and working principle of the BT131-600,412.

The BT131-600,412 is a 600V, 4A, highly reliable, three quadrant, TRIAC designed for general purpose AC switching applications. Its main application field is SCRs, motors and relay type pylon controllers. It is also suitable for use in light dimmers, small temperature controllers, industrial process controllers, flame control and other switching circuit controlling of house appliances.

The BT131-600,412 is a TRIAC, which stands for “Triode for Alternating Current”. A TRIAC is basically two thyristors joined in inverse parallel, allowing both halves of the AC wave to be controlled at the same time. It has three terminals, known as “Main Terminal” (MT1) and “Gated Terminal” (MT2) for Regulation and “Common Terminal” (MT3) for Load.

When a positive voltage on the “Gated Terminal” is greater than the threshold current “IGT” of the Thyristor, it opens and the current will flow through both main terminals and the load regardless of the polarity of the main signal. If the voltage on the “Gated Terminal” is less than the threshold current or removed completely, the Thyristor ceases functioning and the load current is stopped.

The working principle of the BT131-600,412 is the same as that of any other Thyristor. When the gate voltage, known as “VGT”, is greater than IGT, current flows through the BT131-600,412 and the load current flows as long as the gate voltage stays high. When the gate voltage is reduced below IGT, the BT131-600,412 stops conducting and the load current is stopped.

The BT131-600,412 has a few features which make it an ideal choice for the above mentioned applications. It has an insulated package with glass passivated junctions, allowing it to withstand high temperatures up to 175°C. It has an extreme low on-state voltage drop and is designed for very low thermal resistance, giving it improved power conversion efficiency. Its fast switching speed ensures low losses in inductive and power converter loads.

The BT131-600,412 is one of the most popular TRIACs on the market today and is widely used in a variety of applications. Its main application fields are SCRs, motors and relay type pylon controllers, while its low on-state voltage drop and fast switching speed make it an ideal choice for light dimmers, small temperature controllers, flame control and industrial process controllers.
