Working Principle:

The TRIAC continues to act as a short circuit (conductive path) as long as the gate voltage is present, regardless of the polarity of the applied voltage. When the applied voltage is removed, the TRIAC is turned off. If the current through the TRIAC does not exceed the maximum rating specified for the device it will remain in the “OFF” state until the applied gate voltage is re-applied.

The BT137X also has the additional benefit of allowing for a range in its gate current or voltage requirements. That is, a low-voltage or low-current pulse from the gate will turn the TRIAC “ON”. As long as the current or voltage of the applied pulse remains above the minimum specified value, the TRIAC will remain in the “ON” state, regardless of the direction of current flow.
