PMIC (Power Management IC) refers to a dedicated integrated computer chip edsigned to control, monitor, and regulate the power use of an electronic device or a system. It contains solid-state electrical power switches, voltage regulators, voltage-monitoring circuits, clock generators and other related functions. Supervisors are a special type of PMIC which provides circuit reset and power supply supervision functions along with other features. Designed to detect power supply irregularities, they can monitor voltage ranges, dropouts, brownouts and latching. In this article, we will discuss the application field and working principle of one of these supervisors, the BU4826F-TR.

The BU4826F-TR is a CMOS-based Voltage Detector for Power-ON Reset and Power Supply Supervision, commonly used for power supply regulation and commandment. It is a highly accurate digital circuit and can detect abnormally high or low voltages, with a detection range from 1.7V to 10V. The BU4826F-TR sets the reset voltage by using voltage divider equations, and it can be adjusted using external resistors. This supervisor also features an adjustable Under Voltage Detection circuit and a signa reset delay circuit.

One of the main application fields of the BU4826F-TR is mobile phone and other battery powered device. As the capacity of these devices decreases due to overuse or battery leakage, the BU4826F-TR prevents these devices from failing by setting a minimum voltage limit. When the battery voltage drops beyond the preset limit, the BU4826F-TR will immediately alert the user and shut off the device, preventing potential damage caused by an excessive current draw.

In addition, the BU4826F-TR can also serve as a reset circuit for systems with multiple power supplies, automatically resetting the system when it senses that any of the power supplies drops below the preset threshold. This prevents any serious errors from happening due to sudden drops in power.

The BU4826F-TR operates by continuously comparing the input voltage to an internally system reference, which is generated from resistor-selected ratios. This digital integrated circuit monitors the deviation value of the input voltage from the reference voltage, and when the deviation value exceedes a certain threshold, it will switch on the Reset pin and force the system to reset.

The BU4826F-TR also features a voltage-limiting function, which limits the maximum voltage on the input line. When voltage rises beyond this limit, the BU4826F-TR senses it and illuminates a warning LED and drives a logic low on the Latch pin. This logic low will keep the system powered off until the voltage is reset, preventing any potential damages.
